When should you play your Triple Captain in FPL 2026/27? The first set of chips runs out at the Gameweek 19 deadline

4 min readtriple captainchipshaalandcaptaingameweek 7strategy2026/27

The first Triple Captain has to be played by the Gameweek 19 deadline: 18:30 GMT on Friday 1 January 2027. That's 90 minutes before the first game of the round, a Friday night kick-off at 20:00 GMT.

The short version:

  • 2,909,318 managers (26%) have already played theirs. 1,787,071 of them did it in Gameweek 3, 16.1% of the game in one week.
  • No double or blank gameweek is scheduled before the deadline. Every club has exactly one fixture in each of Gameweeks 7 to 19 as at Thursday 15 October, 04:55 BST. FPL adds doubles when matches are rearranged, so this can change.
  • Our model's biggest captain number in the next seven gameweeks is Haaland's in Gameweek 7: 11.4, against 7.5 for Cherki. It's from the 2026-10-14 run, and it is the number to beat.

Correction: our pre-season guide and rule-changes article gave the Gameweek 19 deadline as 13:30 GMT on Saturday 2 January. That was wrong, or went out of date when the fixture list moved. Both are corrected.

How many managers have used a Triple Captain?

Gameweek Triple Captains played Share of all managers Average manager's score
1 250,816 2.3% 50
2 233,946 2.1% 81
3 1,787,071 16.1% 51
4 323,226 2.9% 69
5 226,208 2.0% 48
6 88,051 0.8% 58

In Gameweek 3 the most-captained player, Erling Haaland, scored 9. A Triple Captain on him returned 27 in a week when the average manager scored 51.

The other chips, for scale. There are 11,088,568 managers, and each one has one of each chip in the first set:

Chip Played in Gameweeks 1 to 6 Share of all managers
Wildcard 2,979,776 26.9%
Triple Captain 2,909,318 26.2%
Bench Boost 1,724,610 15.6%
Free Hit 1,337,046 12.1%

Is a double or blank coming?

Not as the fixture list stands. Every club has one match in each of Gameweeks 7 to 19. Doubles and blanks appear when FPL moves a match, usually for a cup tie or a postponement. We update this article when one is announced, and the Triple Captain case changes with it. A double would make a week worth more than an ordinary one: two matches for the same captain.

If you wait for one and none comes, you play the chip at the Gameweek 19 deadline whatever the week looks like. That's the cost of waiting.

Which gameweek has the best captain?

Highest and second-highest projection for each of the next seven gameweeks, from the model run of 2026-10-14.

Gameweek Highest projection Projected Next highest Projected Gap
GW7 Haaland 11.4 Cherki 7.5 +3.9
GW8 Bruno Fernandes 8.1 Haaland 7.9 +0.1
GW9 Haaland 8.5 Bruno Fernandes 7.0 +1.5
GW10 Saka 8.3 Haaland 8.0 +0.4
GW11 Haaland 9.2 Bruno Fernandes 6.9 +2.4
GW12 Bruno Fernandes 7.7 Mbeumo 6.8 +0.9
GW13 Haaland 9.5 Bruno Fernandes 7.2 +2.3

A Triple Captain adds the captain's score a second time, so it is worth the captain's projection. In the model's seven-week window, Gameweek 7 is the standout and the rest are close to each other.

Haaland's run, with Manchester City's fixtures:

Gameweek Manchester City's opponent FPL rating Haaland's projection
GW7 IPS (H) 2 11.4
GW8 AVL (A) 3 7.9
GW9 BHA (H) 3 8.5
GW10 NFO (A) 3 8.0
GW11 FUL (H) 2 9.2
GW12 ARS (A) 5 5.7
GW13 LEE (H) 3 9.5

What does the Triple Captain on Haaland risk?

Our average error across all players is about 2 points. Haaland's spread is wider than that. His 2025/26 starts (60 minutes or more) averaged 7.1, with a standard deviation of 4.8. He scored 10 or more in 30% of them and 4 or fewer in 39%. This season he has 2, 13, 9, 9, 6, 6 in Gameweeks 1 to 6.

That is the honest range: an 11.4 projection is an expectation, and the chip triples whatever he actually scores. A 4 becomes 12, and a 13 becomes 39.

If you hold Haaland and still have the chip, Gameweek 7 is the strongest single-week case we can see. The case for waiting is a double we can't see.

Tell us where this is wrong

  1. Which gameweek are you playing your Triple Captain, and on whom? Name both. We'll score the split in the Gameweek 7 review.
  2. Tell us when a number looks wrong. This chip count, this date, here's why. That's the most valuable message we can get.
  3. Tell us what you'd want to watch. A chip tracker, a double-gameweek alert, or something else.

Send it through the feedback form for anything specific, or join the Discord if it needs a conversation. Both get read every day.
